Being central university, it is getting excellent support from the central government. In recent months, we carried out recruitment drive for faculty and non-teaching staff as there was huge backlog. New buildings are being constructed and new department are also being opened,” said Prof Syiemlieh.

On the question of RGU failing short in compare to other central universities of the country, the out-going VC urged people of Arunachal to be patient and let it grow in its own pace. “We have to remember that RGU started as state university. The initial planning was limited to that of a state university. The transition from state to central university takes time. Therefore, we have to give ample time to RGU before comparing it with other well established universities.”

“RGU is a small university as compared to other central universities. The issues and concerns of RGU are quite different from that of others. We need to give special attention to these issues and concerns,” he added.

He expressed the need for paying serious attention to the college education system in Arunachal. “We need to give utmost importance to college education. The quality of education needs  to be improved at college level, so that our children get maximum exposure, which will make them ready for life ahead. Introduction of semester system examination in college will go a long way in this regard,” said Prof   Syiemlieh.

Prof   Syiemlieh said he will cherish every moment of his stay in Arunachal. “I enjoyed my eight month stint in Arunachal. The unity in diversity and rich tribal tradition of Arunachal has amazed me. My only regret is that I could not travel around the state during my stay as most of the time I was pre-occupied with university work. I loved RGU campus and was ably supported by the staffs. I made lot of friends and learned many new things in the last 8 months,” said Professor Syiemlieh.

Further Prof   Syiemlieh added that he is leaving RGU with heavy heart. “I was beginning to feel at home. But in life they says everything happens for good and therefore I believe that my appointment as UPSC chairman will have store something good for me. However I will continue to keep track of every new development happening at RGU. This university has special place in my heart,” said Prof   Syiemlieh. His last words to RGU students were, “Be true to oneself, work hard and success surely will follow.”

Dibang Valley remains cut off for 5 days

Anini, Jun 06: Landslide and soil erosion triggered by heavy downpour over the last couple days caused major damage to Anini-Roing road with the district remaining cut off from rest of the country for five days. Heaps of debris, stones and mud brought down by heavy showers blocked the road at several points. It will take atleast another 4-5 days to clear the road for vehicular movement, reports DIPRO.

Incessant rain also snapped road communication between Anini-Mipi  and Anini- Etalin- Malinye circles. The Chu-Nallah mini hydel project in Mipi has also suffered huge damage. However, the actual damage caused to the hydel project is yet to be assessed.

According sources, the BRO OC has assured to make the road through for vehicular traffic by June 10.

The Jindal Power Company Ltd has also engaged its earth moving vehicles in restoration work at Etalin –Anini road on request of Deputy Commissioner Abu Tayeng, who is personally monitoring the restoration work. However, the shortage of machinery in a 100 km stretch of road from Anini to Ethi -Nallah is causing delay in restoration work.

The  DC today marched on foot along Anini – Roing  road starting from Kadali to Punli village to take stock of the landslides and personally assess the quantum of damages.

Earlier, the DC inspected the reported defect in the recently launched AMBOLI Bridge and observed minor erosions in one of its abutments. Instructions have already been given to the BRO for corrective measures. Meanwhile, the DC expressed concern that  delay in restoration work would disrupt in regular supply of PDS items causing artificial shortage in such items and other essential commodities.

Further, erratic mobile phone service and non-functioning of landline telephone for the last five months have added to the woes of the district. DIPR

NEW DELHI, Jun 06: The road to a prestigious Sainik School in Arunachal Pradesh is opening up thanks to the ardent pursuance of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki in every possible forum, particularly with the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army.

Calling on Chief of Army Staff, General Bikram Singh here today at South Block Tuki, while wishing the 59 year-old Singh, who was commanding the Kolkata-based Eastern Army Command before taking over the Indian Army, reiterated his request for opening up a Sainik School in the state, probably within the peripheries of the state capital Itanagar.

There are 24 Sainik Schools in the country so far. In the North East only Assam and Manipur boasts of a prestigious school each.

Prospects in civic action programmes like Operation Sadbhavana, creation of infrastructure like community halls, playgrounds, etc and education and health services were discussed in detail, where the Army can play a major role.

Lamenting on the sluggish progress of road projects by BRO in the state, particularly in strategic border locations, Tuki urged the Army Chief to intervene and make the BRO work to the expectations of the people. He also suggested the General to impress upon the BRO to outsource some roads that it is undertaking in the state. This, he observed, would lessen the burden on BRO and allow other reputed and competent companies to finish the projects on time.

Gen Bikram Singh, who has a first hand experience of the region, appreciated the concerns raised by the Chief Minister. He assured his cooperation in all aspects and welcomed similar suggestions and proposals from the frontier state. He also appreciated Tuki for being the first Chief Minister in the country to call on him after assuming the post of Chief of Army Staff.

Meanwhile, to a request made by the Chief Minister, the General green-signaled in principle establishment of additional units of NCC in the state. Tuki had sought the additional units to streamline the youth force through man making and character building and imbibing patriotism.

Determination and will power-- main mantra for Arunachalee woman achievers

Amar Sangno

ITANAGAR Jun 06:  The recent success of Arunachal women in state competitive and joint entrance examinations has proved that Shakespeare’s famous soliloquy in Hamlet’ “frailty thy name is woman” is fatal flaw for them and it should be rather ‘determination thy name is women’.  The state women are on its echelon, in terms of success and sheer determination. Women’s domination over the men can be easily seen in the recently concluded Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission Examination and Arunachal Pradesh Joint Entrance Examinations where the top positions were secured by Shania Kayem Mize and Habung Yarang respectively.

Apart from Mize and Yarang, another lady, namely, Obang Taki has broke the jinx of tribal belief that male are more stronger than female. Taki has cracked the Indian Engineering Service (IES) Examination conducted by Union Public Service recently. She is the first lady IES from the state.

When asked by this correspondent Taki revealed that her father who died in car accident was her source of inspiration. She dedicated her success to her late father. However, she said that her unwavering will and sheer determination was the driving force for her success. She further twitted that any person guided by its sheer determination and strong will, would achieve its goal at the end.

Hailing from Panggeng village under East Siang district, Obing did her schooling from Jonai Jubilee Model School in Assam. Disclosing the reason for opting civil engineering; she said that she also wanted to contribute her share in nation building.

Apparently, Arunachal women are rising from its phoenix, outshining men in every field and empowering the women in the male dominated society state like ours.

The role of women in sustainable development

The role of women in the society as driving force in enhancing sustainable practices can not be denied. Today, women’s involvement in governance and their ability to influence lifestyle at household level is widely recognized world over.

A UN Women report, The Centrality of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women for Sustainable Development, highlights,  gender equality, empowerment and participation of women are integral for achieving the three pillars of sustainable development-social, economic and environmental.

Gender empowerment furthers the achievement of social justice and welfare. It also helps to achieve population control, heightens food security by moulding consumption patterns and accelerates economic growth and poverty reduction. Empowered women can also play a pivotal role in promoting the use of traditional knowledge for advancing environmental sustainability and strengthen their community’s ability to adapt and innovate in response to climate change.

However, while there is a growing realization about these inter-linkages between women empowerment and sustainable development, the potential of women to engage fruitfully as  agents of change and beneficiaries in the current period of transition to 'a green economy' remains largely under-utilized.

Given the impact of environmental changes on women's lives and women's potential to play a positive role, it becomes very important to involve women actively in this shift towards a greener world and integrate a gender perspective in reaching the goals of sustainable development.
